♪ swiffer. great clean in less time. or your money back. new information tonight, the coast guard says it did issue a warning before this oil tanker sideswiped the bay bridge. good evening i'm julie haener. >> and i'm frank somerville. the coast guard tonight is telling us its initial review of internal communications show that the crew of an oil tanker was warned just before that huge ship scraped a fender protecting the base of a tower on the bay bridge. ktvu's heather holmes has our continuing coverage. she is live on treasure island tonight to tell us what the

investigation has yielded so far, heather. >> reporter: frank the tanker of the overseas raymar has been ordered to remain anchored here indefinitely. tonight as you mentioned the coast guard is telling us that those on board this vessel were told that trouble was ahead. before the 750-foot oil tanker struck a tower of the bay bridge yesterday morning, those monitoring its travels warned of the danger. according to information released late tonight from the u.s. coast guard the vessel traffic service on yerba buena island tapped with helping ships navigate safely was in communication with the overseas raymara and alerted the ship to the hazard. but whether the pilot had time to react remains to be seen. >> the pilot is responsible for the navigation of their own vessel. >> reporter: guy kleess is no advantager to the bay. having guided vessels through

the tricky waters since 2005. the coast guard finished their interviews with the pilot and crew. >> they'll have two radar, electronic gps, they'll have navigators manually ploting the course. >> reporter: still with all of that the ship managed to sideswipe the tower. visibility at the time was .25- mile but we've learned there are no sight restrictions for passing under the bay bridge. after the cosco busan new rules were at rules -- new rules were adapted and the busy bay bridge is not one of them. state records we obtained today shows kleess has had prior incidents all minor.

he was ordered to undergo retraining after three incidents in a short amount of time. there are calls tonight for rules to be changed to include the bay bridge. i'm heather holmes, ktvu news. more on the conditions at the bay when all of this happened yesterday morning. we got a look at the simulator in vallejo. on a clear day the bridge is easily visible and avoidable. but when visibility is down to .25-mile as it was yesterday, it can become difficult to see the bridge. instructors at the academy say there are also winds and currents to deal with. we're learning more tonight about the bar pilot guy kleess and n a few minutes what the pilot was not done and why people say there needs to be more transparency of bar pilot

work hours. ktvu's matt keller is live near san jose's japan town to show us what happened, matt. >> reporter: julie we're on 15th street just off of taylor and the road is closed off. police are still trying to mop up and try to determine what caused the fire. it was a massive fire after firefighters were told a house and garage were on fire. firefighters sent out a second alarm. and investigators say something caused them more concerned. >> initial concerns that a citizen say this was a potential meth lab. we found there was nothing hazardous. >> reporter: we're told that an

assistant principal lives inside the home. two vehicles and a boat were outside all were destroyed. the flames were fed by fuel inside those vehicles and propane tanks inside the garage. the house next door did suffer pie -- minor damage but firefighters say it could have been much worse. matt keller. significant plumbing issues caused problems at the alta bates. a code dry alert was issued at 1:00 p.m. for the merit pavilion because of a disruption of the water supply. water could only be used for urgent patient care. that meant no water for hand washing, toilets couldn't be flushed and bottled water had to be used for drinking. by 5:15 this evening water had been restored and code dry has been cancelled. as a precaution, the hospital did suspend all surgeries for

several hours. this is a picture of charles anderson he turned 15 on new year's day. charles is big for his age, he's 5'11" and weighs 250- pound. his mother and stepfather says he left his home in west oakland after a disagreement about going to see a friend. >> go across the street to grandma's house, nowhere to be found. we've checked friends in the neighborhood, the schools, everything. >> his mother says she's worried that the boy may be trying to get to his father who lives in atlanta. the, -- the fbi has spent a second day excavating in a well. this search may be just the beginning. bounty hunters say there are many other well sites near by where the killers likely buried their victims. here is a closer look now at the area in the town of linden

where the digging is happening. a search of a well near a farmhouse turned up human bones last year. the new well current by being dug up is just down the road. thieves have broken into the oakland museum of california making off with valuable historic artifacts. the museum says a era gold box was stolen. back in november thieves also broke into the museum and made off with gold nuggets and other artifacts. the museum has issued a press conference tomorrow to discuss the items stolen and also offer a reward. the new board was sworn in and convened for the first time. two new members are joining nine returns board members. the ceremony set the stage for a vote on board president to

serve for the next two years. >> i would like to nominate supervisor kim, also a tenacious, strong vibrant woman of color. >> not having had a woman lead the board i would like to put forth malia today. >> malia and kim nominated each other against incumbent president chu a chinese american. it quickly became clear neither woman could muster the vote needed to take the spot. a unanimous vote gave chu an unprecedented third vote as president. there were tears and prayers in oakland as friends and family mourned the death of a 14-year-old boy. he is oakland's first homicide victim this year. he was shot and kill -- and killed while sitting in a car. those who knew the teen

remembered him as a player at skyline high school. one woman who attended the vigil said she hopes that people saw the grief and recognize that all the violence needs to stop. victims from a mass shooting in tucson arizona are also being remembered today. two years later that massacre is at the middle of a gun control debate. >> reporter: bells for the victims of the tucson shooting two years ago today. six dead, a dozen injured including then congresswoman gabby giffords. she and her husband used this day to try to prevent more gun violence. >> i have a gun, gabby and i are both gun owners. we are strong supporters of the second amendment. but we have to do something to keep the guns from getting into the wrong hands. >> anybody who is crazy enough to commit a crime will be able to get their hands on a gun. there's 350 million guns in

private owners hands. >> reporter: this 25-year-old who didn't want to be identified was at tanyon sports in martinez today buying her first gun. >> it's mainly for safety and protection of the home. >> reporter: store owner ron kennedy says talk of new laws has increased business. figures show last year seven all time record in california. almost 818,000 guns sold. up 36% in one year. >> in the 50 states we're in the top three of the strictest regulations. >> reporter: everyone we talked to here said government should not just look at guns but everything from mental health to teaching conflict resolution at schools. joe biden begins talks with people on all sides to come up with a solution on how to reduce gun violence in this

country. rita williams, ktvu news. more details on the gun control debate. the national gun association says that it will send representatives to those meetings. president obama set the vice president as head of the association against violence. james holmes is the man accused of killing 12 people inside a movie theater. >> they are saying someone is shooting in the auditorium. >> reporter: the call from the theater in aurora lasted 27 seconds with the caller drowned out by the sounds of gunshots. 30 gunshots were heard in that one call alone. today an fbi agent took the stand and described a massive booby trap in the suspect's

apartment. it included smokeless powder and live rounds. mcclain wears number 55 he was pulled over for a window tint violation in decatur alabama. he lied about his identity and was arrested. mcclain was previously arrested for firing a gun right next to a man's face also in decature. the parents of the debate group pflag died in her home. jeanne ma nford was a teacher turned activist after her son was beat to death during a demonstration. seen here, she wrote a letter to a newspaper saying simply, i have a homo sexual son and i love him. a man took on a burglar who

least a week before the building reopens. hundreds of gallons of water had flooded the building. most of the employees will now work from home for the rest of the week. new at 10:00, parents, teachers and students take to the streets in an effort to protect their turf. one school is fighting to keep another school from moving in. amber lee has the story. >> reporter: we're at the creative arts charter school here in the western edition. the san francisco unified school district is considering adding another school to this property. accompanies by a marching band, students carried a banner as they carried with their parents and teachers to the board of education. they're protesting the council's idea of moving a middle school to the same property. parents say the schoolyard is not large enough to be shared by two schools with a total of 600 students.

>> it's just not a safe environment. you can see how tight it is already. we would be sharing a yard. it's far too small. >> reporter: this father says he's concerned about his daughter with more students around. >> i'm very concerned. with bullying and just make sure she's safe. >> reporter: tonight students tried to make their case to the school board. >> we have barely any room right now and our hall ways are very squished and it's not comfortable. >> reporter: there are already eight schools sharing sites says leigh. >> we would hope working together with the district's help we could make arrangements so they are compatible. >> reporter: one teacher says that she is experienced with the problems with two schools sharing one sight. >> i personally had to break lots and lots of fights.

>> reporter: they will determine whether to offer the site to gate way school. amber lee, ktvu news. a teenager from san francisco pleaded not guilty to murder charges this morning stemming from a deadly car crash on new year's day. 19-year-old david morales is accused of shooting at three people then leading police on a car chase that ended when he crashed at the intersection of 21st street and south van nuys avenue. two people were killed in that crash. one other person suffered serious injuries. the judge has set morales bail as $10 million. he is due back in court on january 28. prosecutors have filed special circumstance charges against a sacramento man accused of shooting and killing two people in a bar on new year's eve. if convicted, montoya could

face murder charges. pittsburg police say an attempted home invasion ended with the intruder being fatally stabbed. >> reporter: police put up yellow tape. about 10:20 this morning it appears an intruder was trying to break into a home. >> this appears to be an interrupted burglary, an individual most likely thought no one was home. >> reporter: but police say a man was inside the apartment. heard someone fiddling with his front door and saw a stranger trying to get back in. >> he retreats back to his bedroom and retrieves a loaded firearm. by the time he makes it back to the front door he is confronted by the suspect who is now inside of his house. >> reporter: investigators say there was a scuffle. the resident dropped his gun and the intruder also dropped a gun which police later determine to be a replica. officers say the resident then picked up a knife and fatally stabbed the intruder in the neck. a woman and child also live in the apartment but they were not home at the time.

neighbors say they are shocked by the violence. >> yeah i was home all day, i didn't hear nothing. yeah i didn't hear anything. >> and are they usually quiet? >> yeah, they're quiet. they're quiet. every now and then you hear the kid playing around but that's about it. >> reporter: tonight i heard from police that the intruder who was killed was a 54-year- old man from pittsburg who had an extensive criminal history including burglary and theft. as for the resident it appears he was acting in self-defense and at this time he does not face any charges. jana katsuyama, ktvu channel channel 2 news. a man was killed after a tractor backed into him on a loading dock. the accident happened at a warehouse on wegman road. police say he was trying to signal the truck driver that he was backing into the wrong spot when he was hit. around 5,000 sandbags were filled today by the california conservation corp. and are now ready to be placed

in east palo alto. shovel full by shovel full crews loaded the sandbags. they're going to be placed around san franciscito creek tomorrow. the creek flooded last year. we have no dense fog advisories tonight. but the dewpoint about 43 degrees so the temperature drops in the next half hour to 43 and you get fog. you're going to see fog in the area again tonight. some frost showing up in locations. 37 for an overnight low in santa rosa. that's as cool as it's going to go. these temperatures are going to be cool. we have clouds which is going

prison health care facilities since 2009. under the court order the state is supposed to reduce the population by an addition 33,000 inmates by june. brown says that's no longer necessary and he will take his fight all the way to the supreme court if he has to. the price at the pump could be going up again. and analysts predict the nationwide pride for a gallon of regular will hit $3.95 in april. in los angeles gas prices will climb to $4.65 a gallon. here in the bay area we usually pay some of the highest prices in the country. the factors sited are the dependable of refineries and usual increases by december. the dow lost 55 points, nasdaq dropped seven. investors are nervous about earnings although the first to report met or beat analysts

antioch police say they are searching for four men accused of attacking a gas station clerk for beer. police say the men who are in their 20s made their way into the gas station around 2:30 this morning. you can see the broken beer bottles there in the parking lot. nothing else was stolen but police say the men did beat up the clerk during the theft. the san francisco man accused of setting his girlfriend on fire could be arraigned on attempted murder and arson charges as soon as tomorrow. police found 22-year-old dexter oliver at an oakland hotel late last night. investigators say oliver threw gasoline on to star lamar and lit her on fire after an

argument. we're learning more about a bar pilot who ran into the bay bridge. there's one piece of evidence the bar pilot's association is refusing to release. >> reporter: we've learned captain guy klees had 15 hours off duty before his ship hit the bay bridge. they work under high stress. >> i think they've got it pretty good. >> reporter: mike jacobs of the pacific shipping association say it is 55 men and one woman who guide ships in and out of the bay are certainly skilled. big ships must fire them. and bar pilots are indemnified for mistakes. they all take their own navigation system on board. >> it's a gps system so we can

retrieve our own information. >> reporter: fail measure to avoid collisions. we've learned captain kleess had 25 years of commanding ships. bar pilots work seven days on, seven off and earn $450,000 a year. >> i think people would be shocked to know how little they work for how much money they make. and that we still have incidents and we still can't help police ourselves. >> reporter: the shipping association sued the bar pilot's commission last summer demanding release of the pilot's log. the court agreed but the bar pilots have now appealed telling me late today that those data are private and personal. they also declined an on camera interview. health and science editor, john fowler, ktvu news. more details now, we obtained state records showing bar pilot guy kleess has been

involved in three other pilot incidents. on august 27, he ran aground in sacramento. on august 29, a ship was damaged at the dock and on may 26, a ship went into shallow water and that caused a thug boat to briefly go aground. it could seem like a past time, but feeding wild animals can lead to problems. feeding wild animals can affect migration patterns. animal control commissioners are meeting later this week to consider several different ways to address the problem including outreach, more signs and maybe stiffer fines. some changes are coming to yosemite national park. but the draft plan by the national park service won't limit the number of daily visitors as some people feared.

instead yosemite will offer shuttle buses and rerout buses to limit congestion. they will limit rafting and access to river banks. tomorrow we will learn if barry bonds has been selected to the baseball hall of fame. a lot of people think the player who hit more home runs than any other player may be left out. bonds has said he never knowingly used performance enhancement drugs and he was later convicted of obstructing justice in a steroids scandal case. tonight we talked to some fans about his chances. >> he should wait his turn and when it's right they will let him in. >> if you're a giants fan, you love what he did for the team. >> he would have had the stats everyone if he didn't do steroids. >> reporter: another name linked to steroids is pitcher roger clemens and he may not make the hall of fame either even though he was acquitted of using steroids. a google app is causing

california. the chopper was headed to an oil rigging location. witnesses say it lost control shortly after lift off. in australia, scores of wildfires are burning in several states as temperatures soar to record highs. the fires have consumed tens of thousands of acres and dozens of homes. temperatures reached 113 degrees and could go even higher. as many as 100 people are unaccounted for in one town. but so far a search has revealed no bodies. and in northern ireland, three police officers were injured in a fifth consecutive night of street fights. some 100 people have been arrested. the union jack used to be flown year round, now it is only displayed on 18 specific days. there are some new problems tonight for boeing's dream liner 787 just as manetta san jose international airport is

preparing for the arrival of its inaugural flight tomorrow. it was towed back to the gate for evaluation. and just yet a fire broke out in the boeing dream liner 878. the 787 is the first plane to use those batteries. an abandoned house in a neighborhood. why some neighbors say you can't even see the worse of it from

a romantic wedding on board a hot air balloon takes a

in that time neighbors have documented from rats to dead racoons. the next taor neighbor planted these giant hedges just so he doesn't have to look at it every day -- the next door neighbor. >> being in such a beautiful place to live. and we have to live next to this. >> reporter: there's been a dispute between the two listed owners. michael o'brien and his stepson john quiley. the state says it has been contacted by quilian who says he is planning to move back in. >> when i pass it, it just makes me sad. >> reporter: in this neighborhood of million dollars homes some if wish the owner would take the money and run. >> all they have to do is sell it and they'd make tons of money. >> reporter: instead you're standing here holding the bag. >> the whole neighborhood is, yeah. it's an eyesore. >> reporter: code management can only regulate what they see from the outside, and cannot go

down over the land like this they don't have a chance to warm up. a lot of times these systems worm up but this one coming down is going to be a cold one. cold systems carry little moisture with them. so we're not expecting rain or precipitation from it. this one will see a few sprinkles but not a lot. maybe .01, .1 at the most. fog is going to be a problem tomorrow morning. as you head off to work get going around town, early morning the fog will be in the east bay and south bay valley. the dewpoints are running right about where the temperatures are right now. fog a real possibility for your early morning commute. just be ready for that. clouds increase tomorrow throughout the day. as that system rolls in it's a cold one but look how dry it is. that's the computer model says just some sprinkles here, sprinkles there. snow level will be low but will there be enough moisture to

create snow? not much moisture with this. breezy conditions. the main story with this just colder. and it's a weather system hard to call it a storm. cooler weather system so when it leaves we're going to be left with very cool air and very cold mornings. thursday night or thursday night into friday morning. some of the coldest air we've seen. so here's the low pressure center goes through tomorrow. no big deal. buff it does leave behind very cool air and that's when we get into the freezing temperatures into the mid-20s perhaps by forestville, by sonoma you can see low to mid-20s. very cool out there. the computer model plays it out then as we look at tonight. the clouds increase. look at tomorrow morning 7:00 a.m., cloudy. there's the showers up here, watch what happens. here it comes, here it comes, what's that? san mateo maybe a little something tomorrow but still cloudy. the thing moves through and scattered showers. now it's clear, now the cold air is here. a few scattered springs but the skies clear and that produce --
